shoes indian

050817shoesRollerClogs.jpg: Rollerclogs

Yes, those are "rollerclogs", made around 1992 in the Netherlands. I wonder if they would have made Xanadu any better of a movie? Nah.

On the top floor was an exhibit devoted to American Indians, their shoes, & their culture. I have never seen so many different kinds of moccasins in my life. My favorite pair, though, was really cool: moccasins made of actual bear paws, & worn during sacred ceremonies. But dang! Bear paw shoes! I'm against fur, but those are seriously bad ass shoes.

There were also platform shoes of a different type. These were also Indian, but worn by royalty during coronations. Wow.

Platform shoes were really popular in Constantinople & other eastern European cities, where they were worn in steam baths so that people could walk without burning their feet. Over time, they became a sign of wealth & privilege.

It is thought the couple turned to a surrogate after having trouble conceiving.

Star magazine claims the babies were conceived in vitro using eggs SJP had frozen some time ago and Broderick's sperm.

The publication also says the woman, a 26-year-old divorced mother-of-one, is reportedly receiving $30,000 (£20,300) to carry the twin girls for the A-list couple.

According to the magazine, the couple will also cover her medical costs of around $20,000 (£13,500) and pay $100,000 (£67,700) to surrogate agency Growing Generations, based in Los Angeles.

The news has just landed that Sarah Jessica Parker is expecting twins through a surrogate – but don't for a minute think our favourite style icon will still be anything but fashion-fabulous!

The Sex and the City star looked breathtaking – not to mention totally edgy and directional – in her stunning wet-look dress, enhanced with beautiful bustline beading.

And, as ever, SJP would have made her alter-ego Carrie Bradshaw proud with those stunning, gold-accented, fierce strappy heels.

The star was enjoying some family time with hubby Matthew Broderick and 6-year-old son James Wilkie at the Patricia Broderick Painting and Works On Paper Exhibition at the Tibor de Nagy Gallery in NY.

Despite her excitement at the impending birth of her twin daughters – she was spotted stocking up on all sort of goodies at children's toy store Just Kidding yesterday - SJP has expressed concern at having enough time for all her family as a working mum.

She told the New York Daily News: 'It's been a complicated past few weeks.

'My main concern is that my husband and son have enough time. I've felt very conflicted over the last few weeks.

'Hopefully, our son is feeling loved and taken care of. I can't really complain because it's my choice to work, but that doesn't mean I don't spend a better part of the day worrying about whether my family is getting enough [time] from me.'

She added: 'Any complications or any anxiety I feel is normal. Any mother who wants to continue to work and have a career outside the home goes through this, so I feel very much a part of the sisterhood.'

The Best Teva flip flops

Flip-flops. Note the method of securing to the...

Teva has so many different flip flops, they could have a company just for flip flops. Most people know Teva for the sandal, but the flip flop is a great shoe also. They have a well built standard flip flop and many modified flip flops.

The Teva women slipper is a classic flip flop with a thick sole and web straps. The cost is about $15 and they will never go out of style. The toolani is a standard flip flop and at $23 does seem to be the greatest value of the bunch. The Bowen Flip Flop is made with water resistant full grain leather straps. It is a 3 point flip flop and has a traction Rubber outsole. This can be casual or a little dressy. The Teva Mandalyn Wedge Flip flop will give you a little lift. This will help dress you up at $25 it will not break the bank.

If you want a softer flip flop the Mush is for you. The top sole will form to your foot. This will be the most comfortable flip flop at $24. As you can see that Teva has a great selection of flip flops to choose from anyone could keep you looking good, when the weather is nice.

TEVA SANDLE

Image

In Action tevas

In Action We first discovered Tevas in Ecuador in 1997 while looking for travel footwear for the tropical north of Colombia. Things have moved on from there though, the originals we bought then were sparselely padded and had an unfortunate tendency to smell distinctly nasty after a day or two.

The Hurricane's are much more cushioned with the contoured top sole offering great comfort for feet backed up by three-way adjustable straps to give a great fit. The cushioned heel strap works too as do the triangular link rings that don't dig into your foot or shift around. The anti-microbial anti-smell treatment is a boon as well with none of the cheesy foot pong of our old model making itself known.

We found them excellent as camp sandals, for schlepping around in hot weather when they're far more comfortable than any enclosed shoe we've used, cultivating the distinctive travellers' 'Teva Tan' and for stream crossings too, with the soles giving the promised good grip and the sandal drying fast, also a boon on wet camp sites.

The Hurricane's aren't specialised walking sandals and don't really offer the support you need for extended hikes, though a mile or two proved no problem. If you do want a sandal for hot weather walking, check out Teva's more specialised products and, in particular, the running-specific Wraptor.

The only other drawback is the intrinsic sandal one of leaving your toes vulnerable to impact with hard, rocky things, so if you're the sort of person who scuffs shoes for England, you may be better off looking elsewhere.

Features tevas

Features They may look like glorified flip-flops, but there's some serious technology and build going down in them their sandals. Take the straps, which are continuous loops embedded right into the sole unit to remove any chance of them pulling out.

The sole unit has moved on too, with dual density EVA providing lots of shock absorption, plus a Microban-impregnated top-sole to fight odours. The tough, but soft webbing straps are adjustable using hook and loop patches and the heel strap is padded with Neoprene. Finally the outsole uses Teva's 'River Rubber' for claimed grip in wet or dry conditions.

The Concept Tevas

The Concept Tevas were invented by American river guide Mark Thatcher as everyday rafting footwear. The idea was to produce a rafting sandal that stayed on securely regardless, gripped well wet or dry, floated if it did go overboard and was comfortable enough for all day wear.

The Teva line's developed since then and diversified into fully enclosed boots and shoes as well as more specialised products like running sandals, but the Hurrican, part of the 'originals' range, is the closest relation to the original Teva sandal albeit with a lot of welcome improvements.

The name, apparently, since you asked, or didn't, is the Hebrew word for 'nature' and pronounced "teh'-vah" .

shoes our dancing daughters

karen dances.jpg
Karen says: “I think you're going to like these.” I'm all: “Like them, are you kidding? You're Joan Crawford in Our Dancing Daughters. You're Ginger Rogers gliding across a silken dance floor in Fred's arms.” Quick, I've got to get my top hat and tux. A few hours later, Karen limps into my office, wailing, and gnashing her teeth. “They're pinching my toes,” she sobs, “I tried moleskin. I tried everything. I have to return them.” Oh, the tragedy. Oh, the injustice. Like a soldier fighting a rearguard action, Karen courageously marches back to Loehmann's.

Rahel was kind enough to send in this self-portrait in Teva Naot with this commentary: “Manolo Blahnik they ain't, but they're warm, comfortable and durable, and they're standing on a bit of Jerusalem ornamental tile. I hope this is OK.” More than OK, Rahel. I have a friend, an Australian film director, who owns a cattle station in the middle of Australia and when he shows me photos he's always riding a horse and wearing boots that look exactly like your Teva Naot. Thanks so much.

Thank you, Pearl!

teva shoes boots

f you’ll be trekking off into the mountains, you’ll likely be more comfortable in a pair of hiking boots (though I hiked to Tiger’s Nest in Bhutan–shown above– in my Tevas). And, if you’re off to Europe for a vacation that will be more focused on city sights, consider a comfy shoe from Aravon’s Traversa Collection.

Aravon Gabby Shoes

Shoes: The Packing Conundrum

Beth in Tevas - BhutanWithout hesitation, one of the most common questions I receive concerns shoes. How to pack them, how many I bring and which type I carry for a given destination.

My number one rule is to never carry more than two pairs. You read that correctly. You should never have more than one pair of shoes in your luggage and one pair on your feet. And, yes, it can be done!

These Shoes Were Made for Walking
You’ll want one pair of comfy walking shoes. I’m partial to Aravon and Pr!vo but Ecco, Mephisto and Aertrex are all popular brands for walkers and travelers.

These brands come in styles that are not only optimal for walking but can also help dress up an outfit. Two features that are appreciated when you’re on the road.

Second Choice

Think outside the rigid toe box

Stiff hiking boots provide ankle support to long walkers, like you'll be, but can horribly overheat feet on a European street in high summer. They take a looong time to break in, too -- think hot spots turning to blisters halfway through your trip. And toe-pinching fashion is not a good thing when it comes to wandering soles. Pick a pair of style-unconscious shoes that do the ahhh thing to aching arches, like Birkenstocks, or provide breathing room in wide toeboxes, like Tevas. Of-the-moment boots and almost anything with a real heel -- yeah, not so much.

I did some substantial European city walking on an EF Tours trip wearing waiter's favorites, Danskos, and my ankles were semi-sorry, and I've walked all around and outside of some world cities in soft hiking boots; I've climbed up and down pyramids and walked what felt like halfway across Mexico in the right flip flops, and I've deeply regretted hobbling around airports in brand new trainers. My best travel shoes advice? Check some choices, get what feels good well in advance and break 'em in pre-trip or suffer the blistery consequences: blisters can ruin a trip faster than you can ask for the Bandaids™.

Teva Wraptor Shield eVents in action

The Teva Wraptor Shield eVents have performed remarkably well in my opinion. Due to the women's shoes not being available in my size at the time this test began, I am testing a men's shoe, US size 7. One thing I immediately noticed with the fit of the shoe is that the toe box is very roomy. I have not had any problems with blisters, corns or tender spots on my toes. My feet can sit perfectly in the shoe and my toes don't bunch up when running.

Big Foot
Teva Wraptor Shield eVents in action

The tread grips well on the many types of terrain on which I run. This includes: sand, dry dirt, mud, through standing water, through running water, gravel and grass. I am very impressed with the comfort of the footbed. Even on loose gravel, I don't feel the rocks poking up into my foot. I can feel the individual rock pieces -- which allows me to keep my balance -- but I don't feel any hard jabbing into my foot. This has the added benefit of keeping me from spraining my knees.

When running through water, the built-in gaiter works very well. Aside from sweat, my feet are comfortably dry and only the tops of my socks -- which are protruding from the tops of the shoes -- have any feeling of wetness [I always wear good, medium thickness running socks with the Tevas]. The shoes wick sweat away very efficiently and keep my feet at a comfortable temperature.

On dry dirt, sand or dusty areas, no debris gets into the shoes. My socks come out clean and there is no trail dust or grit between my toes when I'm finished running. For that alone, I love these shoes.

My only complaints are with regard to putting on or removing the shoes. It takes practice if I wish to do so quickly. Over time, I've gotten better at it, but there is a definite order in which I have to secure/unsecure items on the shoes. To put them on, [assuming everything on the shoes are already undone] I have to slip my foot in, secure the zip cord on the inner part of the shoe, then zip up the zipper on the gaiter while ensuring everything that needs to be inside the gaiter is actually inside. Then I pull the Wraptor Fit system taught and secure it.

Also, if I only have one hand free, I have a very difficult time zipping up the gaiter. This is because the Wraptor™ Fit system, which is a strap that encircles the foot all the way around, goes over the top of the zipper and requires one hand to hold the strap out of the way, while the other hand pulls the zipper up. I've tried it with one hand and was not successful, although if it were really necessary, I'd probably attach a small piece of line to the zipper and use that to pull it closed. I ran into this issue after being bitten by a wasp on my right thumb. The thumb swelled up so badly that it was unuseable and after fighting with the shoes, I ended up not running that day [which in hind sight was probably a good idea].

I've also tried putting the shoes on and taking them off in the dark, and although I am very familiar with the shoes, it's still a difficult task. I know that if I were out in a tent and needed to jump up quickly, these would not be the shoes I'd grab at the time.

The shoes are very light, considering their shape and size and the amount of gear on them. The soles have started to show some wear on the outside portion of both of my heels, but not of a significant degree. I have not washed them yet, but have wiped them down with a moist cloth. They do not have any stains or show any damage of any kind. All seams are holding up well, and the self-sealing zipper opens and closes with ease [when the strapping system is held out of the way].

View of Shoe inside Gaiter

One thing I will be keeping an eye on is where the toe box begins on the top of the shoe, just at the base of my toes. This is where the gaiter is physically attached to the shoe and where the protective portion of the toe box begins. It's at the end of the zipper portion of the gaiter. This area seems to be a weak point with regard to the bending of the shoe when walking or running. I can feel it press on the base of my toes as I push off. I was wearing medium thickness sport socks during at this time, and will try them with thicker socks to see if this is still as noticeable. I also want to see if it develops into a sore spot after trail running for a distance.

Inside

Inside Heel Detail

As noted above, the shoe feels very reinforced; almost stiff while on. And with the Wraptor™ Fit system pulled taught, it felt very close to being a part of my foot. I like that they are on the light side with regard to weight; I don't think I'd like something that tightly strapped to my foot if it were heavy. I wore the shoes one day around my office and found that I really didn't notice their presence on my feet; except when walking on a hard surface. At that point, the shoes, due to their stiffness and hard arch, make noises on the floor.

Inside

Shoe lacing system

It was verging on difficult to get my foot into the shoe. I had to disconnect the Wraptor™ Fit system and loosen it, then unzip the gaiter, then unlock the zip lock on the shoe's lacing system and pull it loose, then pull the shoe open. After all that I had to carefully insert my foot. Once on, the whole process is reversed to close up the shoe. The Wraptor™ Fit system has a hook and loop strip on the end with which I was able to adjust the tightness and seal the shoe to my foot.

Inside

Top View Closed

The Teva Wraptor Shield opens by disconnecting the Wraptor™ Fit system, which is a strap that wraps completely around the shoe and through the bottom of the arch. The arch is made of a hard plastic material. Once I disconnected the strap, I unzipped the zipper of the gaiter. The zipper, when closed, is almost completely sealed. Once the gaiter is opened, the top of the shoe inside is exposed [see the last photo in this report]. The shoe is gray in color, contrasting with the dark orange trim and black body of the gaiter. The lacing system on the shoe portion is made with a rip-cord with a zip lock fastener. The inside of the shoe feels stiff; it's cushioned, but it has a very reinforced feel to it.

Top

Side View Closed

My shoes arrived in a typical shoe box, with the shoes inside wrapped in paper. The shoes themselves had paper pushed tightly into the toebox and had a carboard form placed inside the top of the shoe to hold its shape. The box had an informational sticker on the inside of the lid which explained the aspects of the shoes' tread. The Teva Wraptor Shield shoes are much lighter than they appear. I like their look; particularly the spider logo on the top of the toe.
